To visit the Urban Planet website, please press here

Background:
Urban Planet is a global web-based learning platform, which shows the inter-relational links between research and solutions to create a more sustainable world.

It is a joint project between Stockholm Resilience Centre - an interdisciplinary research institute on sustainable development at the Stockholm University, Albaeco - a nonprofit organization that communicates science within the field of sustainability to the public, politicians and corporations, Mistra Urban Futures, SWEDESD, and Gotland University.

Questions:
How can the project be developed through strategy and concept design? How can you improve communication skills through design and communication? How can you create a graphic identity and platform that is flexible and can be expanded to include similar platforms?

Project:
I worked with Urban Planet through strategy and concept development, and created a graphic identity, developed the design of the website and printed materials for the Shanghai World Expo 2010.

-

Bakgrund:

Background:
We can lower our total consumption rate by choosing to out pick some of our private welfare growth in more spare time, which would lower the stress on our environment and give us time to deepen our life.

Question:
How can you inspire people to choose more time off instead of consumption and to experience places in your nearby surroundings?

Project:
In “My favourite spot” you can swop your favourite spots for someone elses. I collected spots from my fellow students, and went out in town to swop them.

-

Bakgrund:

Background:
When having children, new needs are beeing created and one needs to acquire lots of products to fill these.

Question:
How can you inspire people to rent products for children, instead of buying them?

Project:
I have made a visualization of a service, a library for children products, where a housing company offers the tenants products like strollers, car safety seats, bicycles and toys, amongst others.

-

Bakgrund:

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/26458/408515/examen.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="418" width_o="676" height_o="422" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/26458/408515/examen_o.jpg" align="left" />

Bachelor exam work, awarded a scholarship by Beckmans College of Design.

To me, being a designer comes with the question: How do we meet our needs in the best and most resource-effective way? In today’s market economy, we often create problems that nobody is really in need of solving. Our role has to a large extent come to resemble a kind of trafficker of consumerism.

I want the role of the designer to be responsible, from an ecological, an economical as well as a humanistic perspective.

The creation of sustainable development is the most important issue in society today. I want to work in projects where the role of the designer can be an inspiration to others to see the possibilities in a more sustainable world.

-

Background:
Swop art is a newly opened gallery/swopshop/studio for creatives who find value in things other people consider beeing waste. The ambition is to upcycle waste into art, jewelry, clothing and design - giving it a new life.

Prior to their opening they needed a graphic identity, webpage and interior design.

Question:
How can you make a graphic identity which communicates the ambitions of the gallery? How can you fill the need of flexible interior design by reusing materials?

Project:
The graphic identity includes a logo, business cards, flyers, posters and a webpage, with the ambition to express progressivity, positivity and creativity.

To create the interior design, we engaged in a workshop where we spent a day at Vanadisbergets recycling central, asking people for their soon-to-be thrown away materials and objects. Then we redesigned them and gave them a new life as an interior in the gallery.

Relight is one of the resulted objects, which now can be seen at Roslagsgatan 60 in Stockholm.

The interior was made in a collaboration with Fredrik Ohlén and Oscar Andersson.

-

Bakgrund:

Background:
Ikea is one of the big winners of the globalization, their business model has been successful in generating growth during the 1900s economic structure. They have also played a large part in creating a disposable-culture around interior design, similar to the fashion industry.

Question:
How can Ikea evolve to become a responsible and credible actor in the sustainability discourse, and how could this practically be reflected in their external communication and catalog?

Project:
By using a system of Life Cycle Assessment, Ikea can find out the impact of their products throughout their life, and communicate this to customers who can then make an active choice when purchasing.

At the same time, by starting to produce for example the bookshelf Billy at local woodworks to order, Ikea can take a step from disposable to a more sustainable product.

To investigate the cost of this, a number of Billy drawings were sent to local woodwork with answers in the form of quotations for approximate cost of production.

-

Bakgrund:

Background:
The value of interior design is decreasing and is being consumed in a faster and faster cycle.

Question:
How can you inspire people to use the cradle to cradle-principles, and at the same time raise the value of the materials used and highlight the working time spent in making interior design.

Project:
Interior design of high quality which is based on a systematic reuse of materials.

-

Bakgrund:

Background:
During my research to create a sleeping place for an urban young couple, I found an absence in the market of an affordable more environmentally-friendly option.

Question:
How can you make a place to sleep which is sustainable, flexible and affordable?

Idea:
A sleeping place is often static in both its expression and function, even though the need for sleep is everything but static when you live together. One wants to read whilst the other wants to sleep. One rises early whilst the other has a lie-in.

The soft module Kuro transforms the bed according to the user’s needs. Make a blackout, a headboard, a silencer or just a decoration of an unmade bed.

The bed Kami has a bedding that is foldable according to needs and the bedside table Fuji has the shape of an extended tetrahedron. The shapes of the three units are inspired by origami, geometry and the golden ratio.

The choice of materials, where life cycle thinking is central, is influenced by the Japanese philosophy Wabi-Sabi. What nature has created can be decomposed by nature.

In collaboration with: Bozzolo beds, Bogesunds Väveri, Fredells Byggvaruhus, and Seng Shui: silk wadding quilts and pillows.

-

Bakgrund:

Second prize winner in a competition held by Barnens Bokklubb, to design a bookend for members of bokstödet.se, which is a website for children and young adults with reading and writing difficulties.

Background:
Dyslexia is a learning disorder that manifests itself as a difficulty with reading decoding, reading comprehension and/or reading fluency. It concerns approximitely 4 to 8 percent of the population.

In my research I found parents and teachers of dyslexic children emphasizing the importance of daily reading, to enhance the learning. They talked about motivation through the setting of goals, and rewarding when the goals were met.

Question:
How can you make a bookend which inspires and motivates dyslexic children and parents to read, which is easy to distribute via mail?

Project:
My idea is based on a "motivational bookmark", which is to be used in the daily reading. The parent and child together creates a goal and reward, which the child is beeing reminded of every day. This makes it easy to adapt according to the childs age and interests, making the goal and reward very personal.

The shape of the bookend was inspired by origami and how you fold "dog-ears" in books. The importance was to make it take up as little space in the postal service as possible, to make it sustainable, easy to produce and playful.

The ambition is to use a recyclable material in production, preferrably a stronger version of paper.

-

Bakgrund:
